Getting to the Root of the Problem (Part 2)

Published on December 30, 2025 at 6:37 AM

In my first post titled, Seeking Help for the Root of the Problem (Part 1), I started to mention how harmful smoking marijuana could be. I’ll go into that a little further. Did you know that marijuana smoke contains many of the same toxins and carcinogens as tobacco smoke? That should stop a person smoking marijuana in their tracks. There’s no getting around it, toxins are toxins and carcinogens are carcinogens.

I’ll broaden the topic matter into discussing how THC (a substance found in marijuana) is a spiritual problem. You can do further research into non-smoked forms on your own to discover their harmful impact to the body. But there are spiritual implications to marijuana use (including the use of THC), apart from how it impacts the body.

The Smoking of Marijuana is a Spiritual Matter

In 1 Corinthians 6:15 it says, “Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ?” If you aren’t a Christian, I beg you to read my post on my Homepage titled, My Aim is Love, before you continue to read this post.

But if you’re a Christian, the Apostle Paul furthered what he said in 1 Corinthians 6:15 by saying, “Shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of a harlot? God forbid. What? Know ye not that he which is joined with a harlot is one body? For two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

Flee fornication (sex before marriage). Every sin that a man doeth, is without the body, but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

Have you ever considered that smoking marijuana impacts your spirit and not just your body? It impairs your receptivity to what would otherwise be an unimpaired experience. You’re impairing your comprehension and your spirit, if you smoke marijuana to get high. Smoking marijuana dulls your senses and makes you less alert. And alertness is meant to keep you safe!

Being Vigilant Involves being Alert

If you’re a Christian, then you should be aware of what was written in 1 Peter 5:8, while the church was under persecution, “Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.” Being vigilant involves being alert; free from the impact of smoking marijuana. We are to glorify God readily in our bodies and in our spirits by refusing marijuana use.

By God’s Grace, Rely on the Lord

If you’ve been smoking marijuana (or have been sinning in any other way) as a Christian, you can confess your sin in response to what you’ve been doing. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” So, you can have peace with God through Jesus Christ.

In Godly Sorrow it’s Important to Repent of Your Sin

There is godly sorrow and then there is worldly sorrow. Godly sorrow is when you realize your living contrary to God’s will for your life. And it brings upon you a desire for change. Worldly sorrow is driven by self-pity and fear of consequences. Remember, if you have confessed your sin and felt godly sorrow for it, by confessing your sin you have God’s favor working for you. It’s his job to clean you up as he forgave you after you confessed your sin in godly sorrow and he will cleanse you from all unrighteousness.

In Romans 6:1-4, the Apostle Paul wrote, “What shall we say, then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are baptized with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” As you can see, the expectation is that you will have cooperation with God’s will, to live a godly life, free from the hindrance of sin.

There is No Greater Joy than to be Living in the Holy Spirit’s Power

To live in the Holy Spirit’s power, which is our Advocate, always working in our favor to produce life and godliness in us; we are free to live in the joy of the Lord. The joy of the Lord is our strength. As a Christian, if sin has been a hindrance to you, let the Holy Spirit guide you into continuous joy as a freed participant to the grace (unmerited favor) of God, by life choices that favor your relationship with him.
