A Revelation Made to Hold Onto

Why I don’t Recommend Starting in Matthew for Bible Reading

I had a college roommate who attended Bible studies on-campus. So my first attempt at reading from the Bible was to read from the Book of Matthew as had been suggested to me. But at the front of Matthew is a genealogy that shows the lineage that led up to the birth of Christ. With the unfamiliarity of the names and with the list being longer, I found it hard to stay awake while reading it.

My First Section of Scripture I Memorized

Eventually I discovered the Psalms for taking comfort in the scriptures. And my first section of scripture I memorized was Psalm 1 (although I’m rusty on remembering it these days). Psalm 1 reads:

How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,

Nor stand in the path of sinners,

Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!

But his delight is in the

law if the LORD,

And in His law he meditates

day and night.

And he will be like a tree firmly

planted by streams of water,

Which yields its fruit in its season,

And its leaf does not wither;

And in whatever he does,

he prospers.

The wicked are not so,

But they are like chaff which

the wind drives away.

Therefore the wicked will not

stand in the judgement,

Nor sinners in the assembly

of the righteous.

For the LORD knows the way

of the righteous,

But the way of the wicked will

perish.

The Depth of the Passage (Psalm 1) I did not Realize

Even though I had memorized Psalm 1, I did not realize the depth of the blessing the Lord wanted to give. Now that I’m older and realize that life presents many challenges, I understand the Lord better. His desires are good! And they start for the believer with an appreciative heart. To appreciate all the Lord can do takes an awareness that sometimes youth (in its ignorance) prevents.

Carve Out Time for the Lord’s Blessings

Though it takes time to meditate on scripture, it is time well spent. So take a look at your life and make sure to evaluate it in terms of all the Lord wants to give you. You won’t regret making time for meditating on scripture.
